Where does our energy actually come from, and what would it take to change it?

Learners map what they already believe about planetary health, then test it against real indicators. You facilitate the discussion rather than supply the answers.

Got 10 minutes to prep?

Ten minutes is enough. Print the journal, open the slide deck, and run the three beats below.

  • Open with the big question and take three answers, unfiltered.
  • Show slides 4–7 and let the class sort them into thriving / under stress.
  • Close on the one idea: health is a range, not a switch.

Session objectives

  • Describe what makes an ecosystem healthy in their own words
  • Compare two ecosystems using at least three indicators
  • Explain why a single measure is not enough to judge planetary health

Misconceptions to watch for

  • “The planet is dying.”

Ecosystems are under stress in measurable, specific ways — but “dying” collapses a range of very different situations into one word and leaves nothing to act on.

Try saying: “Which part, and how would we know if it got better?”

  • “Recycling fixes it.”

Recycling addresses a narrow slice of material waste and almost none of the energy or land-use picture.

Try saying: “It helps with one thing. What's the biggest thing it doesn't touch?”

If a student asks…

Is it already too late?
No — and the honest answer is more useful than a reassuring one. Some changes are locked in; many are not. The distinction is what makes action worth taking.
Why do scientists disagree?
They largely don't on the fundamentals. Disagreement clusters around rates and responses, which is normal and is how the picture sharpens.

Got longer?

Integer vitae mollis arcu, eget maximus quam. Cras sit amet ultrices sem, id congue magna. Sed id tempor dui. Pellentesque dictum vehicula fringilla.

Running the full session

Integer vitae mollis arcu, eget maximus quam. Cras sit amet ultrices sem, id congue magna. Sed id tempor dui. Pellentesque dictum vehicula fringilla.

  • Starter — the big question, ten minutes.
  • Main — the ecosystem sort, twenty minutes.
  • Plenary — one idea each, ten minutes.
